What a quote should itemize

Ask for the breakdown in writing. An office that gives you one number is not giving you enough to compare.

The revision policy

A revision policy decides who pays if you need a second operation. Ask these four before you put money down, and write the answers here.

  1. If I need a revision, who pays for the surgeon's time?
  2. Who pays for the anesthesia and the facility on a revision?
  3. Is there a time limit on that policy, and what starts the clock?
  4. May I have the policy in writing before I put down a deposit?

The national average surgeon fees

Each figure below is the average surgeon fee the American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes for that procedure, and the source column opens the page it sits on. These are national averages and not quotes. No office will offer you the average, and the surgeon fee is one line of a total that also carries anesthesia, the facility and the rest of the table above. We publish no city-by-city range, because we hold no sourced figure for any city.

Prices move between cities because the facility fee, the anesthesia time and the practice's overhead are all priced locally, and a national average carries none of them. Compare two written quotes from your own city against each other, and use the figures below to see how far a quoted surgeon's fee sits from the national average.

Average surgeon fee by procedure
Procedure Average surgeon fee Source
Facelift $11,395 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/facelift/cost
Tummy Tuck $8,174 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/tummy-tuck/cost
Neck Lift $7,885 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/neck-lift/cost
Breast Reduction This is the aesthetic-patient figure. Health insurance often covers breast reduction when it treats documented symptoms, so ask your surgeon's practice about coverage first. $7,800 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/reconstructive-procedures/breast-reduction/costs
Rhinoplasty $7,637 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/rhinoplasty/cost
Brazilian Butt Lift ASPS reports this as buttock augmentation with fat grafting. $7,264 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/buttock-enhancement/cost
Breast Lift $6,816 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/breast-lift/cost
Arm Lift $6,192 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/arm-lift/cost
Gynecomastia Surgery $5,587 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/gynecomastia-surgery/cost
Breast Augmentation This is the figure for augmentation with implants. Augmentation with fat grafting averages $5,719. $4,875 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/breast-augmentation/cost
Liposuction $4,711 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/liposuction/cost
Eyelid Surgery This is the figure for upper eyelids. Lower eyelid surgery averages $3,876; many patients combine both. $3,359 ASPS https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/eyelid-surgery/cost
Mommy Makeover A mommy makeover combines procedures (commonly a tummy tuck, breast surgery, and liposuction), so pricing is the sum of its parts and no single published average exists. No published national average

Our cost guides carry the same figures procedure by procedure, with what each one leaves out.

Before you compare the two totals

  • Check that both quotes cover the same operation. One office quoting two procedures and another quoting one is not a price difference.
  • Ask what happens to the deposit if you change your mind, and by when.
  • Ask which follow-up visits are in the price and which are billed.
  • Ask whether the garment, the medication and the post-operative appointments are yours to buy separately.
  • Take the credential question into the room with you. The consultation kit holds the register links and the questions to ask.
